The Enviro Loo is a dry toilet system.
The Enviro Loo is a waterless, on-site, dry sanitation toilet system that functions without water or chemicals. It operates through a process of dehydration and evaporation which occurs naturally through the use of the sun, gravity and wind. The process transforms human solid waste into a safe, neutral material. The treatment and management of the waste takes place in a sealed unit ensuring no water or ground contamination can occur.Interview with representative in 2018

Design Specifications
The Enviro Loo Domestic D2010 model is a permanent installation, designed as a self-contained, all-in-one unit. The Enviro Loo Model D2010, weighs 110.98 kg. Enviro Loo D2010 has a sealed unit that captures and treats waste through the natural processes of dehydration and evaporation in a 3 step process: Step 1: Liquid is separated from solids Faeces and urine drop directly through the ceramic toilet pan onto a sloping reception area known as the drying plate. The urine trickles through drainage holes in the front portion of the drying plate and proceeds by gravity to the liquid trap at the bottom of the tank. Step 2: Solid waste migrates down the drying plate A bed of organic material including enzymes – contained in the Enviro Loo starter pack and added on commissioning of the toilet – covers the drying plate. This organic additive helps kick-start the decomposition process. The ventilation system aids aeration. As the waste moves down the drying plate it is constantly subjected to a large airflow. For example with a relatively low wind speed of 4 kilometres per hour, an airflow of approximately 100 to 150 cubic metres per hour can be estimated through the system. Step 3: Dried solid waste is removed In order to avoid contamination of the dried waste, the waste material is periodically removed from the drying plate collection area and deposited into a hanging drying bag which is placed under the vent pipe. This waste can remain in the bag for approximately six months prior to removal from the system. The time frame (retention period) from entry of the solid waste to the removal of waste from the collection area, depends on the number of users per day as well as the local climatic conditions namely: average wind velocity, ambient temperature and humidity levels. The maintenance process involves, opening the secured inspection cover and using a rake to pull the waste from the top of the perforated drying plate towards the back of the drying plate. This process allows further treatment of the waste and ensures no cross contamination by fresh waste. Adding about 2 to 5 kg of compost to the pile of raked waste and a handful of enzymes and/or builders lime, assists in drying the waste more effectively. After going through an additional composting process, the waste may be used as a by-product for agricultural purposes.Interview with representative in 2018
Technical Support
The Enviro Loo requires minimal waste management servicing on a quarterly basis. All distributors of the Enviro Loo provide a maintenance service on a contractual basis to ensure the sustainable operation of the system. This includes: regular-on site preventative maintenance, followed by a detailed service report. However, the maintenance procedures can be comfortably performed by its owners or community members should they choose.
Replacement Components
Replacement parts and spares are readily available direct from Enviro Loo's factory, as well as from regional distributors.Interview with representative in 2018
Lifecycle
The system comes with a two year manufacturer's guarantee with an expected lifespan of 50 years or more and the life expectancy of the rotomoulded components being 20+ years.Interview with representative in 2018
Manufacturer Specified Performance Parameters
The performance targets of the Enviro Loo include ensuring zero contamination to the environment due to proper installation and a sealed bottom unit. Effective sustainable management of waste due to the natural processes utilised, resulting in an odourless toilet system. And lastly, an expected lifespan of 50 years due to the design using zero moving parts.Interview with representative in 2018
Vetted Performance Status
Research conducted by EnviroLoo demonstrated that at wind speeds as low as 4 km per hour the system drew over 100 cubic meters of air over the drying plate per hour. Field trials were originally conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa and then expanded to locations with varying climatic and moisture conditions. The field trials found that at the majority of locations, both the solid waste dehydration and rate of evaporation was satisfactory over the long term. Microbiological analysis indicated that the number of surviving pathogens ever found in samples taken from the Enviro Loo and tested by the internationally accredited Cydna Laboratories was 30 organisms of e coli, which is below the international standard of 250 organisms allowable per gram of waste material by Health Authorities. Test result data is available on request from the manufacturer.
Safety
By the time it becomes necessary to remove solid waste from the Enviro Loo there is little chance of infection. The only risk is if new material is mixed with the more mature material.
Complementary Technical Systems
Enviro Loo starter pack enzymes help kick-start the decomposition process of waste.

Evaluation methods
Testing was done to confirm operational efficiency at a range of test conditions. Enviro Loo conducted field trials in the climatic conditions around Johannesburg, South Africa. Units were later installed at locations representing conditions of desert, semi desert, high humidity, tropical conditions, areas of winter temperatures down to minus 5 degrees Celsius [periodic] and areas of high rainfall.
