Concrete blocks are cast similar to puzzle pieces that can be interlocked to create the latrine structure. A door frame, door and concrete roof is then attached to create the modular toilet. The goal of this building method is to simplify the construction process to the point that customers can assemble the product themselves.

This sanitation system aims to reduce problems related to construction workmanship and delays by marketing a prefabricated product complete with waste-collection services for urban consumers in Uganda. If users are not able to repay their loans, the manufacturer will retrieve the structure.

Design Specifications

The Durasan latrine was designed to be constructed without the need for skilled masons. The interlocking concrete blocks were designed to fit like legos to enable easy construction, and the sanitation system was designed to integrate latrine construction, upgrading and maintenance to ensure continual functionality.

The manufacturer aims to expand their company to 200 employees by creating a franchise in each region in Uganda. This will be achieved by training entrepreneurs to sell and produce the latrines, with an ultimate target of obtaining 20 outlets by 2020 and then partner with organizations in Kenya and South Sudan.
