What Would You Do with Up to 8,600 Donated Medical Roll Stands?

An unusual opportunity is available to global development engineers and anyone working toward a good cause. The Philips Foundation is donating up to 8,600 medical roll stands to people and organizations that can put them to use. The use could be as intended, or they could be repurposed, upcycled into new devices in some creative way.

The roll stands come in three models and include casters and utility baskets. The parts to be donated have the latest EU-MDR labeling, allowing their use in more than 100 countries.

How can they be used?

Members of the Philips Foundation have demonstrated a few possible uses for the roll stands. The following images are illustrative, but not intended to limit the creativity of innovators who may request the stands.

Why are they available?

Philips increased production of ventilators during the pandemic and now stores a surplus of components and devices in its warehouses. Many of these components are not needed, at least in the short term. Philips is donating this material through the Philips Foundation to the global Engineering for Change community for reuse and recycle.

How will they be delivered?

The devices are stored in warehouses in the USA and China. Up to 6,00 are available in Suzhou, China, and all 8,600 could be made available in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). Upon approval of a request, the Philips Foundation will help to work out delivery and pick-up arrangements.

How to request stands

To request some (or all) of these roll stands, please send an email to innovation@engineeringforchange.org. The message should contain the following information:

  • Name
  • Preferred contact email
  • State the number of units you would like to receive
  • The location where the equipment will be used
  • Briefly describe how you plan to use the equipment
  • Tell us about your team
