About Oumaima Makhlouk

I'm Oumaima Makhlouk, a Moroccan-French data scientist residing in New York, deeply passionate about leveraging technology and data-driven solutions to address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and engage youth in sustainable development initiatives. Since joining the Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY) in 2018, I've been actively involved in various tech-driven initiatives aimed at advancing the SDGs. One of the highlights of my involvement has been organizing and leading the annual UN Datathon, a global data science competition that brings together students and professionals to develop innovative solutions for SDG challenges. Over the past three years, I have collaborated with esteemed partners such as the UN Statistics Division and the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, attracting over 4000 participants from around the world. In addition to organizing the UN Datathon, I have served as a mentor, guiding teams in creating impactful solutions using geospatial and geocoded data to address key transitions such as food systems, education, and climate change. My professional experience as a data scientist at Intel Corporation and as a part-time consultant at the World Bank's Poverty and Equity Global Practice has equipped me with the skills and insights necessary to drive innovation and implement projects that contribute to sustainable development goals. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to participate in the ECOSOC Partnership Forum in 2024, where I hope to showcase the tangible impact of youth-led innovations in addressing SDGs.

I'm inspired by the potential of technology and data to create meaningful and sustainable change in the world. Seeing how innovative solutions can address complex challenges like poverty, climate change, and food security motivates me to continue pushing boundaries. Additionally, witnessing the passion and creativity of young people from diverse backgrounds coming together to tackle these global issues fuels my dedication to empowering and engaging youth in sustainable development initiatives.

Geospatial technologies and data analytics are critical for sustainable development. These technologies enable us to collect, analyze, and visualize data in ways that reveal patterns and insights crucial for making informed decisions. For instance, geospatial data can help optimize food distribution in conflict areas, track climate change impacts, and improve urban planning. Additionally, advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence are essential for developing predictive models and innovative solutions that address various SDGs efficiently and effectively.

My real-life superpower is my ability to connect diverse groups of people and facilitate collaboration towards a common goal. Whether it's through organizing large-scale events like the UN Datathon or mentoring teams, I have a knack for bringing together individuals with different skills and perspectives, fostering a collaborative environment where innovative ideas can thrive. This ability to unite and inspire others has been instrumental in driving impactful solutions and advancing sustainable development initiatives.
