Video: Revo-LOO-tionary toilet design

Why would someone in rural Cambodia want a toilet? Finding out the answer to that question has helped iDE design and deliver better toilets to improve health and sanitation in that region. And the tools they used can help anyone gain insight into personal needs and market forces in developing regions worldwide.

Yi Wei, marketing adviser in iDE Cambodia’s sanitation program, leads this E4C webinar on designing and selling latrines in remote areas.

More than 80 percent of Cambodians do not have a latrine. Well-meaning subsidies have depressed demand for toilets, stymied private sanitation markets, and discouraged a sense of ownership. Disease from improper sanitation kills more children than HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. Wei discusses how her team developed a latrine and delivery system that is affordable to all rural households, regardless of income.

It’s a sustainable market-based sanitation solution that seeks input from all stakeholders at every step — from initial concepts, refinement and prototyping, to final design. This is a recording of Wei’s cleverly-named E4C webinar, Revo-LOO-tionary: Designing sexy toilets and markets to deliver them.
