Material Research to Improve the Performance of the Nth Cycle Cell

Project Overview

Project Description

The main objective of this project is to research and identify new materials and methods to improve the performance of Nth Cycle cells. It is intended that the fellow perform and consolidate the extensive research into reports with recommendations for commercially obtainable material samples or operational parameters to test.

This project is going to be focussed on materials science research. After preliminary onboarding to Nth Cycle technology, the internal R&D team would guide the fellow in their search for academic literature on membranes, electrode materials, surface treatments, operating parameters for electrolysis, mixed-phase flow behaviour, or other aspects of design to build on foundational scientific research. The specific goals for this project can be discussed at the beginning of the project, but some examples could be the number of new material options discovered for testing, the percentage reduction in cell energy consumption, the reduction in wasted material during fabrication, etc.

Impact

Nth Cycle is developing technology to recycle critical metals for battery production to make the electric vehicle & energy storage supply chain more sustainable. The core technology will be modular and co-located on a customer site, thus reducing the cost and energy required to ship hazardous material around the world. Any material improvements that reduce the Nth Cycle cell’s energy consumption, carbon footprint, or waste will help to build a cleaner, more sustainable future.
