Sema Doc is a mobile-centric health solution that allows users to save and borrow money for medical expenses via their mobile phones, as well as get access to a doctor for medical consultations.
The service is available to Safaricom subscribers in Kenya and has a team of 30 doctors to consult on a wide range of conditions including acne, contraception, erectile dysfunction, flu, gout, seasonal allergies, malaria, diabetes, and asthma. The doctors can diagnose 23 conditions and send a prescription via SMS.
Subscribers also receive Ksh.5,000 ($48), deposited directly to their mobile health account if they are admitted to the hospital. They also receive two health tips every day via SMS.

Sema Doc is a service that enables users to save and borrow money for medical expenses via their mobile phones, as well as get access to a doctor for medical consultations. It is a collaboration between Hello Doctor for Doctor Access, NCBA for Health Accounts and Health Loans. and Cannon Assurance for the Hospital Cash Benefit. Clients enroll in the service through a USSD service, by dialing *220# on their Safaricom line. After registration, they are supposed to pay KShs 300 ($2.85) a month in order to access the services. The service is available 24/7 and besides the active inquiry, the users are sent two SMS every day with various health tips. A call goes for Sh 60 unlimited talk, and short messages service (SMS) is free for Sema Doc service. On the back end, there is a team of 30 doctors who answer queries from the user and can give prescriptions over the phone. They are also able to refer people to the pharmacy for drugs.
